Palestinian teen who became a journalist to document Israel’s offensive killed in northern Gaza

As a young man, 18-year-old Hassan Hamad dreamed of becoming a doctor, according to his brother Mohammad. But  last October's attack and the subsequent Gaza war  made him want to become a journalist instead. After spending months covering Israeli attacks in his home territory, the 18-year-old journalist was killed Sunday when  an Israeli rocket attack hit his family home in Jabaliya refugee camp in northern Gaza, according to witness accounts and available footage, according to CNN. "I couldn't imagine that Hassan had been torn to pieces and all that was left was his body. I saw some of his curled hair  and  knew he was gone," said  Mohammad Hamad, 25, who was also wounded in the attack. After the attack, Mohammad tried to retrieve Hassan's scattered body parts. "My father, a neighbour and I collected four kilos of Hassan's flesh. My father buried his remains in the garden until he could collect the rest," he said. "I feel so guilty for holding the door (to my apartment) for him. I should not have opened it," Mohammad said, adding that the two were just two metres apart at the time of the attack. "Hassan was very brave. "He wanted the world to see what was happening in northern Gaza and  insisted on continuing his work, even though many of his colleagues were killed," Mohammad added. A record number of journalists have been killed in Israeli military operations in Gaza, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). CPJ reported on Friday that at least 128 journalists and media workers, most of them Palestinians, have been killed.
