US has had "very urgent discussions" with Israel on humanitarian situation in northern Gaza: State Department

Matthew Miller, a spokesperson for the State Department, stated on Wednesday that the United States government has held "very urgent discussions"

with the Israeli government regarding the need to adhere to international humanitarian law and the dire humanitarian situation in northern Gaza. Miller stated at a press conference, "We are incredibly concerned about the humanitarian situation in all of Gaza, and particularly concerned about the humanitarian situation in North Gaza." He added, "I can tell you, it has been the subject of some very urgent discussions between our two governments." He stated, "We have been making clear to the government of Israel that they have an obligation to allow food, water, and other needed humanitarian assistance to make it into all parts of Gaza under international humanitarian law, and we fully expect them to comply with those obligations." Miller pointed out that the United States has not determined whether Israel is withholding humanitarian aid on purpose, which would be against US and international law. However, he stated, "it is urgent that they correct the situation and allow humanitarian aid to get in," suggesting that a policy shift is not out of the question. The Israeli government's response to the conversations was not disclosed by Miller.

Remember: According to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, Israeli attacks have resulted in the deaths of at least 41,965 Palestinians and the injuries of another 97,590, creating a dire humanitarian situation in the enclave. Civilian infrastructure has been hit by a lot of Israel's strikes. Israel has claimed for a number of years that Hamas fighters conceal from Israeli attacks and launch their own from mosques, hospitals, and other civilian buildings. The claims have been repeatedly denied by Hamas.
