Three quarters of Lebanon’s public schools have been converted into shelters, UN says

A United Nations official said on Wednesday that the start of the new school year in Lebanon has been moved to November 4 "as 75% of the country's public schools have been converted into shelters."

He was talking about the impact that Israel's growing offensive against Hezbollah is having on the country. At a press conference on Wednesday, UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Lebanon Imran Riza stated, "The impact of the conflict on children is immense." He stated that the nation is home to "more than 600,000 people," with over half of those displaced being women and girls. More than 300,000 people have fled to neighboring countries, "crossing over to Syria, and many of them moving on to Iraq or Turkey as well," he stated, adding that "at least 350,000" of those individuals are children. Riza stated that while 185,000 individuals are looking for shelter, "80% of which are already fully at capacity." Riza stated that thousands of additional individuals are being forced to relocate “by orders issued with little notice and frequently after midnight, are left to sleep on the streets or (do) not really know where to go.” Remember: The Beirut-based CNN teams have reported that numerous Israeli strikes took place without warning. Additionally, Israel sends evacuation instructions via text in the middle of the night, when the majority of people are asleep.
