Sarah Michelle Gellar is ‘here’ to fill in for the late Shannen Doherty in potential ‘Mallrats’ sequel

Sarah Michelle Gellar wants to pay tribute to her late friend Shannen Doherty in any way she can, which could include reprising the role  Doherty played in the 1995 cult film Mallrats. The film's director, Kevin Smith,  spoke about his desire to bring a sequel to the big screen in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. He told the publication that he  recently found out that Gellar had auditioned for a role in Mallrats nearly 30 years ago. The revelation sparked ideas about how to make the sequel  without Doherty, who passed away in July after a years-long battle with cancer.

"If we were to potentially do Twilight of the Mallrats, I would have Sarah fill in for Shanann," Smith said of the possible title for the new film. "She would bring a warmth to Shanann, which might be the next best thing to having Shanann there." Gellar herself weighed in on the conversation  on Wednesday, commenting  in the comments section of the publication's Instagram post about her interview with Smith, "I came here for this idea!!" Doherty played the role of Rene in the cult comedy Mallrats, about two friends who go to the mall after being dumped by their girlfriends. The film, directed by Smith,  also stars Jason Lee, Jeremy London, Ben Affleck and Claire Forlani. Smith wasn't sure if a Mallrats sequel would get  off the ground after Doherty's death, especially since  the pair had previously discussed returning to the series and Doherty had agreed to reprise the role. But Smith said there had been "the odd hint" in recent weeks that the project might become a reality as a tribute to the late star, which renewed his hope. "The only good thing is that Shanann is  still  with us and we got to do it as planned," Smith added. "Obviously, I want to make this movie for myself and for a lot of other reasons, but there's an extra push now. And we know who the movie is  dedicated to, that's for sure."
