Top state leader Benjamin Netanyahu requested that the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to eliminate UN peacekeepers conveyed in southern Lebanon after a few were injured in Israeli assaults.
"Get the UNIFIL forces out of harm's way, Mr. Secretary General. In a video statement released by his office, Netanyahu stated, "It should be done right now, immediately." As Israeli forces fight Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, at least five UN peacekeepers have been injured recently.
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) refused to leave the border area one day after five of its members were wounded by Israeli fire in recent days, prompting Netanyahu's appeal to Guterres.
At a cabinet meeting, Netanyahu said that Israeli forces had repeatedly asked UNIFIL to leave, but it had "met with repeated refusals" and served as a "human shield for Hezbollah terrorists."
The UNIFIL soldiers have become hostages of Hezbollah as a result of your refusal to evacuate them. This puts them and our soldiers' lives in danger. We are sorry that UNIFIL soldiers were hurt, and we are doing everything in our power to prevent this from happening again. However, simply removing them from the danger zone is the straightforward and obvious way to guarantee this.
